E is for Echtoplasm

Published on
A spooky, gooey, yet incredibly friendly blob of ghost slime.

Origins & Mythological Mishaps

The Echtoplasm occupies a highly unique space in spectral taxonomy, mostly because it completely fails at being scary. While ancient texts warn of terrifying phantoms haunting the dark corridors of forgotten castles, the Echtoplasm is simply the result of a wizard trying to cast a cleanliness spell on a pile of leftover jelly.

Rather than terrorizing local villages, this gooey phantom friend prefers to slide around looking for high-fantasy heroes to play hide-and-seek with. It is the ultimate low-maintenance familiar for adventurers who want a ghost companion but don't want to deal with spooky chains rattling in the middle of the night.

Physical Traits & Quirks

The Goo Chassis

A translucent, wobbling body made of pure, friendly ghost slime. It can squeeze through keyholes with ease, though it frequently leaves behind a faint trail of sparkling, non-toxic residue that glows in the dark.

The Floating Capability

Lacks actual feet, choosing instead to hover precisely three inches off the ground. This makes it highly effective for avoiding stepping on stray d20 dice left on the floor, though it does occasionally get stuck floating upside down if caught in a strong draft.

The Sound Effects

Instead of a terrifying wail, the Echtoplasm makes a soft, squishy bubbling sound when it is happy. High-ranking paladins have noted that this sound is incredibly comforting during long, dark night watches.

Tactical Advantage

In standard dungeon crawls, its sticky composition makes it immune to basic bludgeoning weapons. Enemies simply swing their swords, get them stuck in the goo, and are forced to watch the Echtoplasm look incredibly pleased with itself.
