Origins & Mythological Mishaps

The Gnoll is the legendary result of an ancient cosmic misunderstanding regarding the concept of a "laughing hyena." Hundreds of years ago, a wizard seeking a cheerful companion cast an amplification spell on a wild pack of plains scavengers. Instead of creating polite, giggling forest guides, the magic manifested an entire society of chaotic, bipedal hyena-folk who find absolute hilarity in low-level tactical ambushes. Modern elven rangers note that managing a Gnoll encampment is less like fighting a horde of monsters and more like trying to quiet down a comedy club that has completely gotten out of hand.

Physical Traits & Quirks

The Laugh

High-pitched, continuous, and deeply unsettling. While ancient bestiaries claim their cackle is a psychic weapon designed to induce fear, modern diaper-changing dungeon masters know it is their default reaction to someone accidentally dropping a sandwich.

Patchwork Plate

Gnolls have a distinct cultural refusal to buy matching armor sets. A standard warrior will wear a single elven pauldron, a goblin shin guard, and a hollowed-out tavern pot as a helmet, giving them the silhouette of a walking recycling bin.

Stealth Tax

Due to their canine ancestry, their tails wag violently whenever they successfully execute a sneak attack. This completely ruins their position in the tall grass during standard campsite raids.

Tactical Advantage

Their intense pack tactics make them highly efficient in groups. However, they can be entirely distracted from a raid by tossing a single, sufficiently large stick into the brush.
