Entry #18 · Spotted by the Wizard
From Mike: I first found out about Redcaps from The Dresden Files. I thought they were interesting characters and did a bit of digging. When R came up, Josh and I thought it would be fun to make a more kid-friendly version of these creatures.
Where it comes from
Redcaps are grumpy little goblins from old border-castle stories. They believe red is the finest colour in the world. Their hats must always be red, so they dye them in berry juice, and they smell a bit like a bakery.
What to look for
- The hat. Pointy, woolly and very red. One Redcap wears theirs. The other is dunking a fresh one in the berry pot.
- The boots. Huge and made of iron. Clonk, clonk, clonk.
- The faces. Long white beards and big grumpy scowls, even when they're happy.
Party notes
- The Wizard: "They said red is the only colour that matters. I asked about purple. They stomped."
- Rory: "We ran up the stairs. They're still clonking up the first step."
Colouring corner
- Red hat, of course. Everything else is up to you.
- Colour the berries spilling out of the sack. Raspberries? Cherries? Blueberries would really upset them.
Mike's tip: Have some fun with what the hat looks like before it gets dunked. Is it grey, yellow, white?
